China's Hainan Province tells 20 apps to fix data violations, plans tighter oversight

( March 31, 2026, 05:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Twenty applications in China’s Hainan Province were ordered to rectify violations within a set timeframe after regulators found illegal collection of personal data, excessive data gathering and failure to clearly disclose purposes of use, the local internet regulator said. The apps offer services ranging from mobile and billiards games to ride-hailing, meditation, AI translation, smart input methods for dating and agentic marketing and social networking platforms. The breaches were found during a first-quarter campaign targeting unlawful collection and use of personal information by apps. The authority said it will institutionalize similar enforcement efforts, tightening oversight of apps and preparing for increased cross-border data flows following Hainan’s customs closure, while aiming to build a more secure and efficient data transfer framework.Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
