Meta warned that community notes may fall short in tackling misinformation

( March 26, 2026, 10:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta’s Oversight Board has warned that the company’s community notes system for Facebook and Instagram posts may be ineffective as a primary tool against misinformation. The board stopped short of assessing Meta’s decision to end third-party fact-checking in the US, but said global rollout of community notes should be conditional. The independent group of experts said that in high-risk contexts, such as elections and conflicts, the feature could pose human rights risks and should be delayed or withheld.Statement follows.
