US Senator Chris Murphy said Wednesday that Democrats should run on a platform that includes promising to try to unwind some of the mergers approved during the Trump administration.
While admitting that if his party regains control of the government, it couldn’t necessarily deliver on the promise, Murphy suggested at a Washington, DC, event* that by being more imaginative in its messaging, the party could “bend reality” and broaden its support.
The senator from Connecticut said the party should tell Paramount
Skydance to enjoy its increased market share, resulting from its deal with
Warner Bros. Discovery while it can, but the Democrats would try to unwind it.
He did not discuss the potential obstacles for following through on the promises.
Murphy said the mergers are part of a broader capture of government by big businesses that has been going on for decades but has reached new heights during the second Trump administration.
He said President Donald Trump has been more “nakedly transactional” than others and added that Trump engages in corruption in a “brazen public way’’ every day.
Murphy, who has been mentioned as a possible candidate for his party’s nomination for president in 2028, said the public is aware that the moneyed interests have gained considerable control of the government.
He said when Democrats craft their election message, they should link the affordability crisis facing average consumers to the efforts by corporate interests to influence the government to allow them to keep prices higher.
“People are feeling super discouraged and super powerless right now. Our economic and political messaging has to be about returning control to human beings,” he said.
