South Korea raises fines for illegal spam senders to up to 6% of relevant revenue

( March 24, 2026, 07:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Illegal spam senders and related businesses in South Korea will face fines of up to 6 percent of relevant revenue under amendments to the Network Act. The Korea Media Communications Commission said the revision to the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection was approved at a cabinet meeting Tuesday and will take effect six months after promulgation. The change significantly raises penalties from the current cap of 30 million won (about $20,000) and allows authorities to confiscate and recover illicit gains from spam operations. Businesses planning to send mass commercial text messages are required to use certified service providers under the Telecommunications Business Act. The statement is attached (in Korean)....
