China warns Mexico on tariffs, investment review, launches probe into trade barriers

( March 23, 2026, 08:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s Ministry of Commerce said Friday it opposes unilateral and protectionist trade measures, urged Mexico to correct what it called its “erroneous practice” of imposing additional tariffs, and expressed serious concern over possible “economic security reviews” of Chinese investments. Responding to media reports that a senior Mexican official said the US had accused Mexico of serving as a “gateway” for Asian exports and supported additional tariffs on imports such as cars and steel from non-free trade partners, the ministry said it had launched a trade and investment barrier investigation on Sept. 25, 2025, into Mexico’s China-related restrictions and will soon publish its findings, with possible countermeasures to follow. Statement follows (in Chinese). ...
