Japan reports 34% jump in data breaches in 2025

( March 13, 2026, 02:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The National Public Safety Commission, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Thursday released the annual report on data breaches. The year 2025 saw a year-on-year 34.2 percent jump in “acts of unauthorized access” that were recognized by the victims. Among the 7,190 reported cases last year, more than 85 percent targeted internet banking or stock trade accounts. Of the 248 suspects arrested, 91 were in their 20s and 81 were aged from 14 to 19.Statement (in Japanese) attached....
