South Korea privacy watchdog sanctions Lotte Card over breach affecting 2.97 million

( March 12, 2026, 04:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s privacy regulator on Thursday announced that it has fined Lotte Card 9.6 billion won ($6.5 million) after a hacking incident exposed the personal credit information of about 2.97 million users, including resident registration numbers belonging to roughly 450,000 people. The Personal Information Protection Commission said the breach stemmed in part from the company recording resident registration numbers and other personal data in plaintext in log files, a practice that exceeded the limited circumstances under which such identifiers may be processed under the Personal Information Protection Act, and from failing to apply adequate encryption.
