EU Commission considers gas price cap and market redesign to curb energy costs

By Louis de Briant ( March 11, 2026, 15:32 GMT | Insight) -- The European Commission is considering capping or subsidizing gas prices as part of potential changes to the EU electricity market design aimed at cutting energy costs, commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday. Options include expanded use of power purchase agreements, contracts for difference, grid reforms and possible tax cuts on electricity. The comments come ahead of an EU energy ministers meeting next week.The European Commission is weighing options to address the energy crisis, including reforms to the EU electricity market design and a possible cap or subsidy on gas prices (see here)....
