Mercedes-Benz hit with antitrust sanctions in South Korea over EV battery claims

( March 10, 2026, 03:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Mercedes-Benz was fined 11.2 billion won ($7.6 million) by South Korea’s antitrust regulator for misleading consumers about the battery cells used in some of its electric vehicles. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said Tuesday the company distributed sales guidance to dealers that concealed the use of Farasis battery cells in several EQE, EQS and other EV models while portraying the vehicles as if they were fitted with CATL batteries. According to the regulator, dealers relied on the material in sales pitches, leading consumers to believe they were buying CATL-equipped vehicles; about 3,000 Farasis-equipped cars worth roughly 281 billion won were sold during the violation period. The regulator also imposed corrective and disclosure orders and decided to refer Mercedes-Benz Korea and the German headquarters to prosecutors.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
