South Korea to enforce tougher privacy law with 10% revenue fines

( March 9, 2026, 06:05 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s revised Personal Information Protection Act will be promulgated on March 10 and take effect on Sept. 11, strengthening corporate accountability for data breaches following a string of major incidents. The Personal Information Protection Commission said the amendment introduces punitive fines of up to 10 percent of total revenue for repeated or serious violations, significantly raising the potential penalties under the current framework. It also expands breach-notification obligations, requiring companies to alert individuals when a breach is suspected, and strengthens oversight responsibilities for CEOs and chief privacy officers. Mandatory ISMS-P, the state-backed information-security certification for major public and private data handlers, will be introduced from July 1, 2027.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
