Australian tribunal's Bunnings ruling won't be appealed, privacy watchdog says

( March 5, 2026, 06:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian privacy regulator says it will not appeal the ruling that found Bunnings’ facial-recognition deployment lawful. In a statement on Thursday, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said that while specific updates to existing guidance on use of facial-recognition technology will be made to reflect the Administrative Review Tribunal’s recent decision, the regulator will not challenge the ruling. The watchdog said updated guidance will emphasize that the ruling confirms that entities will need to conduct a detailed risk assessment specific to their circumstances before deploying facial-recognition technology. The regulator said retailers should view the decision as a useful case study, rather than a green light for deployment of biometric technologies.Statement follows....
