Google gets greenlight to access South Korea's high-precision base map

( February 27, 2026, 05:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google’s request to access South Korea’s 1:5,000 high-precision base map has been approved by an inter-ministerial consultation body, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Friday. The approval comes with several conditions, including requirements to remove or restrict the display of geographic coordinates for South Korean territory on Google Maps and Google Earth. Google must also process the original data exclusively on servers located in South Korea and operated by its local partner and may transfer only data that has been reviewed and approved by the government. In addition, only limited data necessary for navigation services, such as base maps and road networks, can be exported.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
