China, Germany vow deeper trade ties, dialogue on export controls during Merz visit

( February 26, 2026, 04:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China and Germany pledged to deepen trade cooperation and manage tensions over export controls during Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first official visit to Beijing, according to a joint statement issued by Chinese state media Xinhua on Wednesday. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang met Merz, who was accompanied by a 30-member business delegation, also reaffirmed support for multilateralism and free trade. The statement said China took note of German concerns over “de-risking,” trade imbalances and export management, while Germany acknowledged China’s concerns over the securitization of economic and trade issues and export controls on high-tech products. Both sides said they would address each other’s concerns through candid dialogue and continue cooperation on climate and green transition issues.Statement follows (in Chinese)....
