Japan privacy watchdog warns municipality over data protection protocol failures

( February 26, 2026, 03:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission on Thursday said it issued administrative guidance to Tokorozawa City in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, after a former municipal tax official improperly accessed relatives’ personal data for nearly two years to claim unlawful tax deductions. The watchdog found that the city’s access controls and record-keeping systems were inadequate, allowing the misconduct to go undetected since January 2023. The commission said it opted to publicly disclose the case to encourage stricter data governance practices among municipalities nationwide.Statement attached (in Japanese)....
