South Korea seeks fixes to AI regulations seen as blocking market entry, innovation

( February 20, 2026, 08:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s competition regulator is launching a six-month study to identify and propose fixes for “competition-restricting” regulations that hinder technological development and market entry in the artificial intelligence sector, as part of a push to build an innovation ecosystem where AI-focused companies can grow sustainably. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said on Thursday the study will target rules that limit free entry or excessively constrain business activity, including requirements that make it harder for new technologies and business models to launch products, services or new markets, and measures that entrench concentrated market structures and protect incumbents. It will also examine overlapping or overly burdensome compliance regimes, such as duplicative rules and excessive certification or inspections, that impose unnecessary time, cost and staffing burdens on SMEs, small merchants and startups. The regulator says it will use the findings to select its 2027 regulatory-reform tasks and pursue changes through consultations with relevant ministries. The procurement notices are attached (in Korean)....
