South Korea to study high prices in streaming, cinemas, oil, ice cream

( February 20, 2026, 08:22 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea's competition regulator is commissioning a six-month research project into high prices in video streaming, cinemas, edible oil and ice cream, four sectors where price increases have drawn public criticism as excessive relative to underlying cost movements. According to the notices issued Thursday by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, the research will examine market conditions, cost and margin structures and pricing patterns to determine whether concentrated market structures are enabling dominant companies to push through price increases that persist even after input costs fall. The findings are intended to underpin policy proposals, including regulatory reforms and sector-specific measures to bring prices down.The procurement notices are attached (in Korean)....
