South Korea picks new team to join sovereign AI development contest

( February 20, 2026, 07:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea on Friday designated a consortium led by Motif Technologies as the fourth team to compete in the second round of a government-initiated project to develop world-class artificial intelligence foundation models. The consortium, comprising 17 organizations, will join consortia led by LG AI Research, SK Telecom and Upstage AI, which have already advanced to the second round to develop proprietary AI foundation models from scratch. The government will evaluate the teams’ performance in the second round in early August and announce which teams will advance to the third round. South Korea launched the project in early 2025, initially called the World Best LLM project, to secure the capability to develop world-class AI models on its own.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
