South Korea enacts SMR promotion law amid AI-driven surge in power demand

( February 13, 2026, 07:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s parliament approved late on Thursday a special law to promote the development of small modular reactors, or SMRs, as electricity demand rises due to artificial intelligence and data centers. The legislation consolidates three separate bills into a single bipartisan measure that is expected to help accelerate research, development and demonstration of SMRs as a stable carbon-free energy source. The Ministry of Science and ICT said it expects the new law to help South Korea secure a leading position in the global SMR market.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
