Coles' supermarket-lease bid referred to in-depth Phase 2 review in Australia

( January 29, 2026, 06:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Grocery retailer Coles Group’s proposed leasehold acquisition of a supermarket and liquor site in the state of Western Australia has been referred to a Phase 2 review under Australia’s new mandatory merger regime, the competition regulator said. In a statement on Thursday, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said the lease acquisition relates to a proposed development on a vacant site in Kalgoorlie, where Coles plans to operate a large-format supermarket and a liquor store. The statement noted that Coles already operates one supermarket and three Liquorland liquor stores in Kalgoorlie and that the acquisition may give Coles a significant share of the local grocery-retail market, where “competitive constraint from rival supermarkets may be limited and timely new entry may be unlikely.”Statement follows.
