China defends strategic partnership with Canada amid US tariff threats

( January 27, 2026, 09:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China and Canada are forging a new type of strategic partnership that will not target any third parties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Monday. Responding to US threats of 100 percent tariffs on Canadian imports because of the country's potential trade deal with China, Guo said the new partnership is designed to appropriately address bilateral economic and trade issues between two countries with concrete arrangements. Guo noted that the initiative reflects a commitment to mutual respect, openness, and win-win cooperation, a stance he said benefits both nations and contributes to global peace and economic stability.Excerpts of statement follow (in Chinese). ...
