US FTC highlights issues in potential modification of Google injunction

( January 21, 2026, 23:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Federal Trade Commission filed a brief highlighting issues to consider regarding any modification to an injunction that bars Google from requiring consumers and app developers to use Google’s in-app payment processing system for the purchase of digital goods or services within Android apps downloaded through the Google Play Store. Among other things, the agency said that the court should consider the effect of the proposed modifications on the ability of Google’s actual and potential rivals to overcome Google’s network effects. Additionally, the brief said the court should consider whether eliminating the catalog access and App Store distribution remedies would have significant competitive implications or modifying the prohibitions against requiring Google Play Billing on in-app purchases would have significant competitive implications.
