EU updates biofuel rules to curb deforestation and high-carbon land use

( January 22, 2026, 10:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Commission is updating the methodology and data for determining the share of food and feed crops used to produce biofuels, bioliquids and biomass, in the case where expansion of the production area into land with high-carbon stock is observed. The concern is that such production indirectly leads to the conversion of natural land into agricultural land. The update is presented as a draft act, open for feedback for four weeks, before being adopted as a delegated act. The Commission notes that patterns of production for food and feed crops later used to produce biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels have changed. Where significant expansion into land with high-carbon stock occurs, the draft act seeks to reduce the contribution of these crops to renewable energy targets. The associated risk is the release of carbon stored in the soil or vegetation, and the potential contribution to deforestation....
