EU lawmakers urge development of European social media platforms after Grok furor

( January 19, 2026, 12:38 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Commission should enable the development of European-owned user-centric digital platform alternatives, a cross-party group of 54 European lawmakers said ahead of a European Parliament debate on the need to enforce the EU's digital rules following an outcry over the use of X's Grok chatbox to generate non-consensual sexual deepfakes. In a letter to the Commission president, the group said the EU executive should also invest in private European initiatives supporting homegrown social media innovation, and guarantee users robust portability rights for their posts, connections, and interactions. Full press release below:...
