AI service providers get legal guide on telecommunications laws in South Korea

( January 20, 2026, 07:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Artificial intelligence service providers in South Korea will have a new guide clarifying how existing telecommunications laws apply to their services, after the country’s media and communications regulator released its first such guide on Tuesday. The Korea Media and Communications Commission said that the guide identifies relevant provisions for service providers under the Telecommunications Business Act and the Network Act for AI. Under the guidance, AI service providers, classified as value-added telecommunications providers such as video-streaming services and online platforms, must not engage in conduct that harms user interests, fail to disclose key information, and must take necessary steps to prevent the distribution of illegal and harmful content.
