LG AI Research, SK Telecom, Upstage advance in South Korea's 'independent AI' project

( January 15, 2026, 08:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: LG AI Research, SK Telecom and Upstage have advanced to the second stage of South Korea’s “independent AI foundation model” project after the science ministry narrowed five elite teams to three. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the program is a national push tied to the new government’s goal of a “strong leap forward” in AI and an effort to reduce technological, cultural, economic and security dependence on global models. The first-round review blended benchmark testing, expert screening and user feedback, assessing performance and usability alongside cost efficiency and anticipated spillover benefits for the domestic AI ecosystem. The ministry said it will select one additional elite team by April 2026 to maintain a four-team competition structure and widen participation, including for consortia that were not chosen in the first-stage results.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
