South Korea tightens privacy oversight with preemptive inspections

( January 15, 2026, 05:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Companies that handle large volumes of personal data will be subject to preemptive inspections and heightened monitoring during and after privacy incidents, as South Korea’s privacy regulator shifts to a risk-based enforcement approach following a spate of data breaches last year. In a statement on Thursday, the Personal Information Protection Commission said it will move away from a largely reactive, penalty-focused approach toward proactive enforcement, including advance inspections of companies whose data processing poses higher risks. The PIPC said it will also prioritize enforcement against “dark patterns” and other unfair data practices across web and mobile app services, while stepping up oversight of AI-driven automated decision-making services and blockchain-based virtual-asset platforms.
