Coupang urged by South Korean regulator to remove 'one-sided' breach claims

( January 15, 2026, 03:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Coupang has been urged by South Korea’s privacy regulator to immediately take down app and website notices about information it claims to have obtained from the suspected leaker behind its data breach, after the watchdog said the one-sided claims could confuse the public and potentially hinder its probe. In a statement on Thursday, the Personal Information Protection Commission said its commissioners reviewed Coupang’s response to improvement recommendations it adopted twice in December and and found the company’s follow-through largely formalistic and insufficient. The regulator also asked Coupang to add an in-app/web function allowing people to check whether their data was breached and to swiftly notify affected individuals included in the shipping-address list. It warned that repeated failures or delays in submitting requested materials could be treated as obstruction and could aggravate penalties if sanctions are later imposed.The statement is attached (in Korean)....
