Time-limits on antitrust probes aren't mandatory, ECJ rules in Italian cardboard case

( January 15, 2026, 09:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Packaging company Imballaggi Piemontesi has failed to convince EU judges that deadlines for concluding proceedings before a competition authority are mandatory under EU law. The judges ruled on Thursday that extensions of the initial investigation deadline are permissible where they are reasoned, subject to judicial review, and do not prevent the investigation from being concluded within a reasonable time. The probe, repeatedly extended, concluded in 2019 with €287 million in fines for collusion against the company and other corrugated-cardboard makers.The judgment is attached.
