Peru advances toward Digital Economy Partnership Agreement membership

( January 13, 2026, 07:35 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex summary: Parties to the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement, a trade pact that sets rules for digital trade and data flows, have reached a substantive conclusion in talks on Peru’s accession, clearing a key hurdle in the process. A joint statement on Tuesday by participating governments said an accession working group chaired by South Korea agreed that Peru’s existing legal framework, policies and practices demonstrate its ability to comply with DEPA’s high-standard rules, including on digital trade facilitation, consumer protection and cross-border data flows. The parties will now work with Peru to complete the remaining steps in line with domestic requirements. Signed in 2020 by Chile, New Zealand and Singapore, DEPA is the world’s first standalone digital economy agreement. Accession working groups are also assessing requests from Canada, China and the United Arab Emirates.Statement follows....
