EU probe of Anglo American-MMG ferronickel deal weighs up supply for key sector

Merger investigators are concerned about the impact the deal could have on the supply of low-carbon ferronickel which they say is key to Europe's production of high-end steel, a strategic industry. Supporters of the deal say steelmakers can use high-carbon ferronickel or pure nickel as alternatives.In September, Brazilian mining giant Vale fired up a second processing furnace at its Onça Puma mine in the northern Para state, adding 15,000 tonnes of nickel production capacity, much of which will be shipped across the Atlantic to European producers of high-end stainless steel....
