First amendment to South Korea's AI Basic Act approved

( December 31, 2025, 00:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s National Assembly has approved the first amendment to the AI Basic Act, largely aimed at providing legal foundations for initiatives announced after the law was first enacted in late 2024. The amendment, passed by parliament late Tuesday, was prepared by consolidating nine separate revision bills into a single version, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The revision codifies the already announced rebranding of the presidential committee on AI and the establishment of a national AI research institute, while also providing legal foundations for making the public sector a catalyst for promoting innovation in the artificial intelligence industry and for strengthening AI accessibility for vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities. Most of the revised provisions will take effect when the main law is implemented on Jan. 22, 2026, while several measures are set to take effect six months later.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
