South Korea conducts first AI-model safety evaluation in bid to develop expertise

( December 29, 2025, 03:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea on Monday unveiled the results of its first safety evaluation on a locally developed multimodal artificial intelligence model, Kanana Essence 1.5, using its proprietary evaluation tools. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the AI model, developed by Kakao Corp, achieved higher scores in various safety benchmarks than its global peers Meta AI’s Llama 3.1 and Mistral AI’s Mistral 0.3. The evaluation was conducted as part of the country’s efforts to secure and strengthen its capability to test high-performance AI systems using its own tools so that it can contribute to global collaboration in assessing safety and security of AI systems. South Korea is part of a 10-member International Network for Advanced AI Measurement, Evaluation and Science — formerly the International Network of AI Safety Institutes — along with the US and the UK.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
