Online platforms see EU propose extension of voluntary child-abuse detection rules

( December 19, 2025, 14:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Online platforms have seen the European Commission propose an extension of the current interim regulation in place, so providers can continue voluntarily detecting, reporting and removing child sexual abuse material until permanent EU legislation is adopted. Without this extension beyond April 2026, platforms would be forced to halt these practices, creating an enforcement gap until the long-term child protection framework is finalized. The extension of the interim regime is set to run until April 2028.Press release follows, proposal attached....
