72% want new legislation to tackle digital dark patterns, EU consultation shows

( December 19, 2025, 16:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Almost three-quarters of respondents want the EU to introduce new regulatory obligations to address so-called digital dark patterns, design techniques used by companies to trick or manipulate users, a European Commission survey of consumers, business associations and large companies showed Friday. The consultation, which aims to inform the commission's planned digital fairness law, also showed 70 percent said new binding rules were needed to tackle addictive design features. In a separate statement commenting on the consultation, Michael McGrath, the commissioner responsible for democracy, justice, rule of law and consumer protection, said the commission would, "take this input forward to shape a proposal that is focused, balanced and effective."  Report is attached....
