Coles' two supermarket-lease bids cleared with conditions in Australia

( December 19, 2025, 04:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian grocery retailer Coles’ proposed leasehold acquisitions for new supermarkets in Deanside Central and Mt Atkinson in the state of Victoria have received conditional regulatory approval. In a statement on Friday, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said that Coles had agreed to divest its leasehold interest in a site at Kororoit Town Centre in western Melbourne, Victoria. The regulator said it was concerned that Coles already had a significant share of large-format supermarkets in the local areas, “each of which faced little competitive pressure from ALDI and independent grocery retailers.” The proposed divestiture, according to the regulator, would likely prevent a substantial lessening of competition resulting from the acquisition by ensuring the Kororoit site is available to a rival supermarket operator.Statement follows; Coles’ undertaking is attached....
