South Korea, UK sign upgraded FTA, with digital-trade rules added

( December 16, 2025, 06:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea said it signed an upgraded free trade agreement with the UK on Monday, concluding years of negotiations to complement the existing arrangement following the UK’s departure from the EU. In early 2024, the two countries began talks to update the FTA, which had originally been carried over from the South Korea-EU agreement. Although the upgraded FTA will not overhaul tariff rates for bilateral trade, the UK has agreed to ease rules of origin for key South Korean exports such as automobiles and to provide easier access to the UK’s government-procurement and services markets, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said. The agreement also includes new trade norms, including digital-trade rules and a framework for cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, supply chains and innovation, the ministry said.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
