South Korea sets record AI budget, accelerates AI foundation-model development

( December 12, 2025, 07:55 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea has allocated a record budget of 9.9 trillion won ($6.7 billion) for AI projects in 2026, which nearly tripled the previous year. It will begin constructing the National AI Computing Center and plans to secure 260,000 advanced GPUs to meet rapidly growing computational demand for next year, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. In its policy briefing to the president, the ministry said it plans to complete the first version of a homegrown AI foundation model, developed by five selected companies, and release it as open source with a goal of elevating it to one of the world’s top 10 AI models. Building on the model, the government plans to develop specialized AI services in sectors such as defense, manufacturing and culture. It also aims to accelerate the adoption of physical AI across manufacturing, shipping and logistics, while identifying and easing regulatory barriers that hinder AI deployment in medical, industrial and public-service sectors.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
