Austrian law on smart meter data access conforms to GDPR, EU legal opinion says

( December 11, 2025, 10:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary:  An Austrian law on regulating data accessed from smart electricity meters “doesn't contradict” the EU's GDPR or the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, provided that consumers are informed in advance of the specific purpose for which data may be retrieved outside the “normal” reading interval, which is the standard daily-reading of customers' electricity consumption, according to a legal opinion prepared for the EU Court of Justice. The case stems from a dispute between Netz Niederösterreich, an Austrian grid operator, and a customer who refused a smart meter. The opinion isn't binding on EU judges, who will rule at a later date.Advocate general's opinion is attached....
