China presses Mexico to drop unilateral tariff hikes, flags ongoing barrier probe

( December 11, 2025, 05:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China urged Mexico to stop its proposed unilateral tariff hikes on countries without free-trade agreements, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Thursday. The ministry said it is closely watching Mexico’s approval of the proposal and assessing the potential impact. Although some rates were lowered from the version submitted in September, the measure set to take effect in 2026 would still significantly harm trading partners, including China. The ministry launched an investigation into trade and investment barriers targeting Mexico in late September. It also cautioned that trade agreements, including those linked to future reviews under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, must not impede global commerce or undermine China’s legitimate interests.The statement follows:...
