Covid support program fraud cost UK taxpayers £10.9 billion, govt says

( December 9, 2025, 12:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: UK taxpayers lost £10.9 billion ($14.5 billion) due to fraud on the government's Covid emergency support programs, most of which will be impossible to retrieve, the finance ministry said on Tuesday. A report by Covid Counter Fraud Commissioner, Tom Hayhoe, showed that while £1.8 billion had since been recovered "much of the shortfall is now beyond recovery," it said in a statement. Weak accountability, bad quality data and poor contracting were identified as the primary causes of the losses, with the report showing fraud controls were ‘inadequate’ and only improved later in the pandemic, it said. Statements are attached....
