Nine EU countries call for cautious 'European preference' approach

( December 9, 2025, 08:09 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The EU should be cautious when applying a "European preference" approach to its rules aimed at boosting the bloc's competitiveness in light of geopolitical tensions, as it could also have negative effects on international trade relations, a group of nine member states warned in a document presented at the meeting of industry ministers in Brussels on Monday. The governments of Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Sweden, and Slovakia said that EU preference rules should focus on sectors where the bloc has a high-risk dependency, and only after an impact assessment is carried out to avoid disrupting supply chains and distorting competition.See statement attached....
