North Korea's AI research heightens cyber risks, South Korean institute warns

( December 1, 2025, 07:51 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: North Korea is accelerating its image- and speech-based artificial-intelligence research in ways that pose growing military and cyber risks, South Korea’s Institute for National Security Strategy said in a report. Since the late 1990s, North Korea has actively developed lightweight algorithms for facial recognition, multi-object tracking, speech synthesis and accent analysis that work in low-power, data-poor environments, the South Korean government-funded institute said. Those models could support real-time surveillance, identity obfuscation and more effective social-engineering operations. Integrated into existing automation tools used by North Korean cyber operators, the systems could speed cryptocurrency theft and synthetic-identity fraud, it added.Report attached (in Korean)....
