China's Xi urges stronger online-ecosystem governance, tighter platform oversight

( December 1, 2025, 03:32 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday urged stronger governance of the online ecosystem, calling for the accelerated development of new technology, quicker deployment of research results and a tiered security-supervision framework to address new challenges posed by emerging artificial intelligence and big-data applications. Xi told a study session of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party’s Central Committee that authorities should integrate educational, administrative and legal measures, using policy guidance and administrative permits to align regulatory oversight with industry self-discipline. Xi also underscored the need for Party leadership, tighter guidance of online platforms, "self-media" — China’s term for independent content creators — and multichannel content providers, and more active participation in international rule-making and joint efforts to combat online crime.The statement follows (in Chinese)....
