South Korea's Webzen sanctioned for deceptive loot-box odds in MU Archangel

( November 30, 2025, 03:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Webzen has been sanctioned by South Korea’s competition regulator for deceiving players about the odds of winning rare items in its mobile game MU Archangel, receiving a 158 million won ($108,000) surcharge and corrective orders. The Korea Fair Trade Commission found that for three loot-box style products, Webzen used a so-called “floor system” under which rare items could not drop at all until users had made dozens of paid draws, even though the game displayed non-zero probabilities from the first pull. The actual probability for key items was 0 percent up to thresholds ranging roughly from 50 to as many as 150 pulls and then increased sharply, which the regulator deemed a deceptive practice under e-commerce law. Citing the limited scope of Webzen’s voluntary refunds, which reached fewer than 5 percent of the roughly 20,000 affected players, the regulator said it opted for a stricter response than in other recent loot-box cases.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
