China's top court highlights online harms to minors in trio of rulings

( November 20, 2025, 08:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China’s top court has released three cases illustrating efforts to strengthen online protections for minors and to punish illegal and criminal acts involving juveniles. In one case, a Suzhou company was found liable for infringing a minor’s portrait rights after using a primary school student’s image in product listings without consent from the minor’s guardian. A second case involved a minor who posted disparaging and mocking remarks about a classmate online, leading a court to hold the child’s guardian responsible for the defamation. In the third case, the court issued criminal penalties against a juvenile and another defendant who learned extortion tactics from harmful short-video content and then used them to carry out a money-seeking scheme. It also issued judicial recommendations to the platform for lapses in content review.Statement follows (Chinese). ...
