South Korea needs unified law on medical AI, parliament research says

( November 25, 2025, 07:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea should establish a unified special law to govern the management and use of medical data in the age of artificial intelligence, as existing rules are dispersed across multiple statutes and sometimes conflict, the parliament’s research agency said. Provisions related to medical data are currently found in the Basic AI Act, the Personal Information Protection Act, the Medical Service Act and the Digital Medical Products Act, covering similar and at times overlapping issues, the National Assembly Research Service said in a report. This fragmentation has led to inconsistent procedures and standards for the safe development and use of medical data, it said. A unified law would promote the systematic integration and linkage of medical data across ministries, while enabling national-level governance and practical, data-driven policy coordination in the digital healthcare sector, the agency said.The report is attached (Korean)....
