Getty Images largely loses major UK copyright case against Stability AI

( November 4, 2025, 11:22 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Getty Images and others have scored a partial victory over trademark infringement in their intellectual property dispute in the UK courts with image-generation company Stability AI, but largely lost their copyright infringement claims over image reproduction. High Court Judge Joanna Smith ruled on Tuesday that while Stability’s models were found to have infringed the trademark of Getty subsidiary iStock, there was no evidence of any UK users reproducing the watermarks. She disagreed that the AI model itself represented an “infringing copy” of Getty’s intellectual property, a key claim by the image library, as the model does not store or reproduce any copyright works. Smith did not consider any award of damages to be justified.Judgment attached....
