APEC leaders adopt joint statement amid conflicts over US tariff policy

( November 1, 2025, 05:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Heads of state and representatives from the 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, or APEC, adopted a joint statement on Saturday at the end of their annual summit meetings in Gyeongju, South Korea. They reaffirmed their commitment to building a sustainable, interconnected and innovative Asia-Pacific region and emphasized “the importance of trade, investment and supply chain resilience,” according to the Gyeongju Declaration. However, the statement dropped a usual reference to APEC’s pursuit of a free, open, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent, inclusive and predictable trade environment amid conflicts between the US and most of its trading partners over the Donald Trump administration’s turn to protectionist and nationalist trade policies. Instead, the 21 members, which also include China, Japan and Russia, agreed to support a proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific and foster “participation by micro, small and medium enterprises.”The statement is attached....
