AI-companion providers served with legal notices, Australian regulator says

( October 23, 2025, 00:20 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Legal notices have been issued to four artificial intelligence companion chatbot providers requiring them to explain the measures they are taking to protect children from online harms, the Australian online safety regulator said. In a statement on Thursday, the Australian eSafety Commissioner said that notices were given to Character.AI, Glimpse.AI, also known as Nomi, Chai Research Corp, and Chub.AI under Australia’s 2021 Online Safety Act. The statement added that the notices require these providers to report on the steps they are taking to keep Australian children safe online. The regulator said that the providers that fail to comply with the watchdog’s reporting notice could face enforcement action, including financial penalties of up to A$825,000 ($535,103) per day.The full statement follows:...
