Japan's METI panel weighs draft evaluation of tech companies under platform-to-business law

( October 20, 2025, 08:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A monitoring panel under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Monday discussed its draft assessment of large technology companies in the e-commerce, app-store and digital advertising sectors as part of the ministry’s annual evaluation. The draft report acknowledged some progress by designated platform operators but identified continuing concerns about the weaker bargaining power of smaller Japanese businesses. The operators under review include Amazon, Rakuten and LY Corp. in e-commerce; Apple and Google in app stores; and Google, LY and Meta Platforms in digital advertising. The panel said Rakuten and LY should broaden their definitions of business user complaints, while Amazon and Meta were urged to continue to strengthen their voluntary compliance measures. The METI is expected to finalize evaluations by the end of 2025 under the platform-to-business law, which seeks to ensure fair and transparent dealings between tech platforms and Japanese businesses.The statements, in Japanese, are attached....
